Summer vacation has arrived for all of Germany's states, sparking congestion concerns. Today, the last states, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, start their holidays, resulting in nationwide school closures and anticipated travel surges.

The ADAC warns that the coming weekend will likely be among the summer's most congested. Traffic is expected to significantly increase this afternoon. Motorists should prepare for considerable delays both when starting and returning from vacation.

Delays are particularly frequent at the approximately 1200 highway construction sites across the country.

The ADAC advises that if possible, travelers should consider traveling during the week to avoid peak congestion.

Traffic Jam Hotspots (in Both Directions)

Traffic Abroad

Patience will be needed on European vacation routes as well. Transit routes in and through Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and France are particularly prone to traffic jams. Delays are also expected on routes to Northern Europe and on the main routes to and from Poland, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands.

Border Controls Cause Delays

Random checks continue at numerous border crossings. German controls focus on the borders with Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, France, and Switzerland. Waiting times of 30 to 60 minutes are not uncommon. Poland also carries out checks upon entry. Expect traffic jams at border crossings such as A4 Ludwigsdorf (Görlitz), A11 Pomellen (Stettin), A12 Frankfurt (Oder), and A15 Forst.
